Located in the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the University of Sheffield is a public research university, a member of the Russell Group of research-led universities, and one of the UK’s original redbrick universities.

Key statistics

Today the university teaches 27,000 students, including around 3,900 international students from 120 countries, and employs approximately 6,000 staff. It is renowned for the excellence, impact and distinctiveness of its research-led learning and teaching. Famous for its excellent student social life in a unique city. Its academic departments are divided into six faculties: Arts and Humanities; Engineering; Medicine, Dentistry and Health; Science; Social Sciences; and International Faculty, City College, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Its motto translates as ‘To discover the causes of things’.

The city also benefits from its close proximity to the Peak District, a national park and area of outstanding beauty. It is also within striking distance of other major cities in the North of England, including Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle.The  students come from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds, so English may not be their first language. Yet with the support of experienced, highly qualified staff, they can achieve their academic and career goals. The college is in a brand new, custom designed building on campus, within the centre of the city. Class sizes are small and learning environments use the latest teaching technology.

English Language Requirements

  • Undergraduate applicants are required to achieve a minimum of IELTS 6 or equivalent.

  • Postgraduate applicants are required to achieve a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

A variety of qualifications can be considered for direct admission to undergraduate bachelor degree programmes.

Indian Standard XII A Levels
Applicants with a minimum aggregate of 75% and 75-80% in key subjects at Standard XII will typically be considered for direct admission to undergraduate degree programmes. Please note some departments will require a higher score.For Medicine A100: A minimum of 85% overall is required. To include 85% in Chemistry and another science. In addition A grades in A level Chemistry and another science are also required as well as the UKCAT. Applicants with a minimum of 3 A levels will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes. Required scores and subjects vary from course to course and can be found in our online prospectus.

Holders of a 3 year Bachelors Degree Holders of a 4 year Bachelors Degree MBA applicants
Holders of a three year bachelor degree with a minimum of 60% or "first class" from a reputable university will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or taught masters programmes. Please note some departments will require a higher score. Holders of a four year bachelor degree in science, engineering or technology degrees with a minimum of 60% or "first class" from a reputable university will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or taught masters programmes. Please note some departments will require a higher score. As well as suitable qualifications (as per the information above) at least 3-5 years' post-graduation work experience will be necessary for direct admission to our triple accredited MBA.

For Entry to Postgraduate Research Programmes e.g. MPhil, PhD Holders of a bachelor degree with a minimum of 60% or "first class" from a reputable university and a good masters degree with a minimum of 60% from a recognised university, will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes.

In exceptional cases, applicants with only a bachelor degree with a minimum of 60% from a reputable university may be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes.

Accommodation for International Students

  • All the international undergraduates and post graduates who choose The University of Sheffield as their firm choice through UCAS,  are guaranteed a study bedroom in University owned or partnership accommodation provided they meet all the conditions and apply before the deadline.

  • University accommodation is an affordable option and students are guaranteed a safe, friendly place to live which offers good value for money.

  • Both self-catered and catered accommodation is available, all with Internet access.

  • International students are spread evenly throughout the accommodation, rather than clustered together.
