Newcastle University  is a public research university in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North-East of England. In 1963, following an Act of Parliament, King's College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Key statistics

Newcastle University is a red brick university and is a member of the Russell Group, an association of prestigious research-intensive UK universities. The university has one of the largest EU research portfolios in the UK. Newcastle attracts over 20,000 students from more than 120 different countries.

Teaching and research are delivered in 24 academic schools and 40 research institutes and research centres, spread across three Faculties: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; the Faculty of Medical Sciences; and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering. The university offers around 175 full-time undergraduate degree programmes in a wide range of subject areas spanning arts, sciences, engineering and medicine, together with approximately 340 postgraduate taught and research programmes across a range of disciplines. The Medical School in Malaysia, NUMed offers full UK medical and biosciences degrees in-country, while in Singapore it offers seven undergraduate degree programmes ranging from engineering to food and human nutrition.

English Language Requirements

You need a good level of English language to study at Newcastle University.

Undergraduate

If English is not your first language you will need to provide a recognised English language test or qualification. 

In most cases you will need an overall score of IELTS - 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 or equivalent in each of the four sub-skills:

  • Writing

  • Reading

  • Speaking

English Language Requirement:

75% from either English; Core English or Functional English From the following Exam Boards: CBSE ISC only

  • IELTS waiver will be provided for the above-mentioned boards only who have secured 75% or above in class 12 for English (English should be the 1st Language).Students from Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand will not be eligible for IELTS waiver.
  • Pearson PTE 62 with no sub-score lower than 51
  •  TOEFL: 90 overall with no sub-score lower than 17.

Post Graduate:

  • Most of our courses require and IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.

  • Engineering courses: 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 or equivalent or above, although for some courses the required score will be higher.

English Language Requirement:

  • IELTS waiver will be provided for CBSE and ISC only and who have secured 75% orabove in class 12 for English (English should be the 1st Language). Students from Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand will not be eligible for IELTS waiver.

Undergraduate Requirements

 75% average in Standard XII as comparable to ABB at A level.

Postgraduate Requirements

If the student is applying for a course equivalent to a 2.1 the students must procure:

● 60% marks if he is a section 1 University pass-out

● 62% marks if he is a Section 2 University pass-out

● 65% marks if he is a Section 3 University pass-out

If the student is applying for a course equivalent to a 2.2 the students must procure;
● 58% marks if he is a section 1 university pass-out
● 60% marks if he is a Section 2 university pass-out
● 63% marks if he is a Section 3 university pass-out
For MRes at least 1.5 years of work experience is preferable.

All students are guaranteed accommodation for their first year of study, provided that they meet certain conditions. A full list of these conditions can be found on the university website

  • Both self-catered and catered accommodation is available and Internet access is provided.

  • International students are placed across university accommodation and do not have to move out of their accommodation during the Christmas and Easter vacations.

  • Most accommodation sites are within 10 minutes' walk of the campus. Some are a little further out, but nothing more than a short Metro or bus journey away

To qualify for the New Students' Guarantee as a undergraduate*, you must:

  • Have accepted our academic offer to study at Newcastle as your firm choice university

  • Be enrolled for the full academic year

  • Be a single student (ie not need accommodation for you and a partner or family)

Mature undergraduate students aged 25+ will be allowed to choose from residence options within both undergraduate and postgraduate areas. If you prefer not to live with students between the ages of 18-22, we recommend you make your selections based on the postgraduate options available.
