Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is a public university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It offers over 700 courses for students to choose from, with more than half its courses including an integrated work placement or similar.

Key statistics

It was founded in 1843,( granted university status in 1992) originally as the Sheffield School of Design and in response to the industrial revolution, in which Sheffield established itself as a leading centre for steel production. It is modern university with a long and proud history, and a commitment to transforming lives. The university prepares its students for the future, and creates knowledge that provides practical solutions to real world challenges.

The university has two campuses: City Campus is at the heart of the city and located near to Sheffield railway station; and Collegiate Campus, which is a couple of miles further out and surrounded by green space. Both comprise Grade-II listed buildings alongside more modern facilities.

The university prides itself on its health and social care courses, teacher training,  sport and physical activity being academically strong and ambitious, with an emphasis on practical and applications. Its most popular courses by enrolment numbers are in business and administrative studies, medicine, and biology. Its connection to business and the professions directly influences courses and teaching, with the highest number of students on sandwich courses of any other English university.

English language Requirement

All applicants are required to gain an internationally recognised English language qualification before entering an undergraduate or postgraduate programme, such as IELTS or TOEFL. As a guideline the minimum IELTS requirement is IELTS 5.5 for pre-masters programmes and IELTS 6.0 for other academic programmes Please note that some courses may have higher English language requirements. Indian students who have reached a minimum of 70 per cent in English at Standard XII will be considered as equivalent to IELTS 6.0 for a number of post graduate programmes.

Courses require different levels of qualifications for entry and the details provided below are for guidance only.

Applicants with the following qualifications from  will be considered for entry on to undergraduate programmes

  • Standard XII with an average score of 60%

  • Applicants will require IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent.

  • A levels

  • International Baccalaureate

  • HND qualifications will be considered for entry to the second or third year of a relevant undergraduate degree

Applicants who have completed the first year of an undergraduate degree at an Indian university may be considered for direct entry to Sheffield Hallam University undergraduate programmes.

Pre-masters programme (Graduate Diploma)

Students holding a degree in a subject considered unsuitable for direct entry to a masters programme - 'conversion' students.

Postgraduate taught programmes (masters)

  • Three year Bachelor Degree with a minimum score of between 55 to 60 per cent or above (from a reputable university)

  • Four year Bachelor Degree with a minimum score of 55 per cent or above (from a reputable university)

  • Successful completion of a recognised pre-masters course

MBA (Masters in Business Administration)

  • Applicants will be required to have a minimum score of 55% from a relevant three year degree and should have completed at least two years of post-qualification full-time work experience in a supervisory role.

  • Applicants will require IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent.

Accommodation Requirement

  • The university will guarantee to offer you a room in one of our halls of residence if they receive your application within the required date.

  • If they receive your application after this date don’t worry as they will still process your application and find you a place to live but in exceptional circumstances you may be referred to their private sector team and invited to their expertly run house hunting event. 

  • You may prefer to live in private sector accommodation, they can give you advice and help finding it. You can apply for private sector housing online in the same way as you would apply for halls. 

  • By submitting your application you are not automatically guaranteed an offer of accommodation. 

  • An offer of accommodation will only be made once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer to study at Sheffield Hallam University and you have received a CASE number from Admissions at the University upon payment of your tuition deposit (non EU applicants only).

Automatic discounts and bursaries

The university is offering all international students (non-EU) an automatic discount of at least £1,000 for full-time taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Sheffield Hallam graduates could be eligible for a discount of up to 25% towards postgraduate tuition fees.
